Building Corporate Visibility 101

Joanne Kennedy
Vice-President, Strategic Communications

Have your corporate communications efforts been working for you lately? Perhaps you should review the five key building blocks of corporate visibility:

  1. Employee (Internal) Communications
Studies show that good places to work earn double the returns of the overall market. Year after year, good places to work are recognized for their commitment to good internal communications.

  2. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
“Doing good” in the community keeps employees happy, wins local support and bolsters your brand. New investors (coined “Socially Responsible Investors”) seek information on local corporate initiatives. They look for transparency. Strategies to support the environment or contribute to health or social programs are key. Governance policies and practices will not only impress investors, they will boost your corporate morale.

  3. Web Presence
Do you leverage your website by having it updated regularly? The web is the number one way to find information about you, your products or company executives. To be effective, your site needs to be dynamic so Google can find you – and make sure you use words on your site most people would put in a search engine. Think like your potential client or investor.

  4. Media Relations
Media relations seem like the obvious means of increasing corporate visibility, but many companies simply do not take the time. Establishing a relationship with print or electronic media does not have to be complicated - you can use a communications agency to help you. Media that have direct contact with you and access to good information are more likely to write a positive story than those that do not.

  5. Corporate Collateral
Outdated corporate collateral? Your sales people will be the first to complain. Even in today’s wired world, a corporate brochure, fact sheet or product sheet is important. Whether in hard copy or in soft – corporate collateral says, “We are credible”.

It is worth thinking about your company’s efforts to build visibility and your accompanying strategic plan. Done right, your communications efforts should translate into a specific, bottom-line related return on investment.
